This project stemmed from a conversation with my friend Rohan Zhou-Lee, a multi-ethnic ballerino based in Chicago. He was recently involved with The Nutcracker and was cast as one of the ethnic dancer characters in the piece. While The Nutcracker is one of the most popular and beloved ballets in the world, It also carries blatant stereotypes when Act II sees dancers from around the world—China, Arab, Spain, and Russia—come to entertain the two protagonists.

My project explores the stereotypical representations of Asian American in popular culture through The Nutcracker Chinese Dance and ties the classical ballet piece with the interactivity of new media to visualize the power that every audience has in representing an authentic voice for Asian Americans.
